Kristen - African Photographer Mario Macilau

Mario Macilau is an African photographer born and raised in Mozambique during the midst of the critical phase of the civil war. He and his family struggled financially and decided to move to the capital. He first became interested in photography in 2003, and in 2007 he traded his mom's cell phone for his first camera. The focus of his work is on contemporary social issues and cultural heritage. His photographs are striking, provoking, engaging, and mildly disturbing, yet very human. He has been known to even incorporate sound into his exhibitions to facilitate understanding of his subject's lives and stories. His work has been published in many national and international publications and featured in international exhibitions.
